What happens in a deep plane facelift?

A deep plane facelift can be performed awake under local anesthesia, with sedation, or with general anesthesia. The incision starts in the hairline at the temples, reaches around the ears, and may extend to the lower scalp. Your facial muscles are tightened in the deep tissue plane and your facial fat pads are repositioned in a lifted and youthful position. If you have a sagging neck that also requires lifting, the neck lift with platysma muscle tightening will be performed through the same incision. Another incision might be placed under the chin, especially if you have severe signs of aging in your neck. Once your facial muscles have been lifted, excess skin will then be removed.

Do I need facial fat transfer?

Facial fat transfer is a modern facial rejuvenation technique that has dramatically improved facelift results. This is important because we lose youthful volume in our face that is vital to supporting our facial muscles and skin. Loss of volume leads to hollowing around the eyes, sunken cheeks, temples, and straining of the chin and mouth which can make us appear older and even tired or angry when you’re not.

A facelift can reposition tissues and remove excess skin but it cannot restore volume. This is where fat transfer provides the benefit of volume restoration, the icing on the cake for your final facelift results.

For the fat transfer procedure, your live fat cells are gently collected from a part of your body with excess fat, such as the abdomen, and transferred strategically to enhance your facial contour. The fat cells will then become live fat cells that restore the youthful volume to your face.

What’s the facelift recovery like?

The first night after surgery you will stay in our on-site recovery suite with a caregiver by your side at all times to make sure all your post-operative needs are comfortably met. You will have a dressings around your head and you may have drains that your caregiver will manage for you overnight. You can minimize discomfort and pain using oral medications.

The next morning, Dr. Wu will visit you in your recovery suite to remove your dressings and check your surgery sites to ensure that you have a smooth recovery. The surgical sutures will be removed after 5-7 days, and the subsequent bruising and swelling will gradually dissipate within 2 to 4 weeks.
