Scarless Rhinoplasty in The Woodlands, TX
Learn why a “closed” rhinoplasty is preferred by Dr. Wu
What is rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty, popularly called a “nose job,” is a common surgical procedure to reshape the nose. During this plastic surgery, the shape, size, projection, or overall appearance of the nose is changed to create more facial balance and harmony. Besides cosmetic changes, a rhinoplasty can also straighten a deviated septum to improve your breathing.
Dr. Wu curates a highly personalized rhinoplasty surgery plan to reshape your cartilage, change the bone structure, nose shape, or improve breathing problems.

Why Dr. Wu favors the “closed” rhinoplasty technique
CLOSED RHINOPLASTY
A “closed” rhinoplasty is the preferred technique used by Dr. Wu. In contrast to the “open” rhinoplasty technique with an incision at the middle of the columella (i.e., the bridge of tissues separating the two nostrils), a closed rhinoplasty surgery is performed using incisions hidden discreetly inside the nostrils leaving no external scars. With this surgical precision, the healthy blood flow to your nose is preserved. In the hands of a skilled surgeon, a close rhinoplasty delivers powerful and predictable results.
Key benefits of a closed rhinoplasty:
- No visible scar on the outside of your nose.
- Preservation of more support structures in your nose.
- Less disruption to your nose means less swelling and faster recovery.
- Result generally appear more quickly and are frequently more natural.
- Most importantly, because the skin covering your nose is not “pealed” away, long term results are more predictable as the intact nose can be more accurately “fine-tuned” to the desired outcome during surgery.
You’re a good candidate for rhinoplasty if you:
- Are in generally good physical and mental health.
- Don’t have underlying medical conditions that prevent optimal wound healing or recovery.
- Don’t smoke or are willing to stop smoking several months before and after the surgery.
- Have realistic expectations from the rhinoplasty.
- Are dissatisfied with the shape, size, or general appearance of your nose or have trouble breathing.
Dr. Chaowen Wu will carefully examine your nose and discuss your goals during an extended consultation. She’ll also review your medical history, ask about your lifestyle, and determine if you’re a suitable candidate for a rhinoplasty.
What happens during the rhinoplasty surgery?
Your surgery is performed at a fully accredited surgery center under general anesthesia. During the surgery, Dr. Wu will make the necessary incisions depending on your specific goals and requirements.
Dr. Wu will adjust the nose cartilage, bone, and other tissues according to your goals. In some cases, the procedure may also involve placing bone or cartilage grafts from other parts of your body. Dr. Wu will walk you through the entire procedure before the surgery, so you’ll know what to expect.
After making the necessary adjustments, the surgeon will close the incisions and place a nasal splint and bandages.
What’s the post-rhinoplasty healing process like?
Depending on the specific details of your procedure, you may need 1 to 2 weeks of professional downtime. This should give you enough time to rest and heal before resuming work. You must keep your head elevated for the first 24 hours to minimize bleeding, swelling, and bruising.
The nose splint will be removed after 1 week, but you’ll still have some post-treatment swelling and bruising for a few weeks. It may take up to 12 months for your nose to settle completely in its new position.

Why does Dr. Wu recommend closed rhinoplasty instead of open?
The benefit and advantage of getting a closed rhinoplasty is that this technique preserves healthy blood flow to your nose and avoids adding a scar to the outside.
Can I get closed rhinoplasty if I had an open one in the past?
A revision, or secondary, rhinoplasty can be performed closed even if your first surgery was performed open. In fact, it may be desirable to perform your revision closed to avoid adding more injury to your nose skin.
What can be done to narrow or change the shape of my nostrils?
Nostril reduction (alarplasty) can be performed alone or as a finishing touch to a rhinoplasty surgery to refine and narrow the base of the nose. This is performed using incisions at the base of the nostrils to reshape them to balance your facial features.
Why is rib sometimes used in rhinoplasty?
Sometimes cartilage is needed to enhance the aesthetics of a nose or to help improve breathing. Most of the time adequate cartilage is available inside the nose to use, however when there isn’t is enough cartilage or if there was previous surgery or injury to the nose in the past, cartilage may be needed from the rib to enhance the nose.
