What is eyelid surgery?
As you grow older, the gradual weakening of your eyelid muscles and the accumulation of fat above or below your eyelids can lead to drooping eyelids, under-eye bags, and other cosmetic problems. An eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, is a surgical procedure that repairs droopy eyelids and reverses the signs of aging on your eyelids.
Eyelid rejuvenation may begin by restoring the position of your eyebrows followed by removing excess skin from the eyelids. This will reduce the sagging and drooping appearance, making your eyes look youthful and alert.
In some cases, your eyelid surgery can be complemented with carefully administered fat injections. If you have under-eye hollows due to the loss of volume and collagen, Dr. Wu can harvest fat cells from other parts of your body and inject them into your under-eye region. This can reduce puffiness and under-eye hollows, thereby improving the results of your eyelid surgery.
You’re a good candidate for eyelid surgery if you:
- Are in generally good physical and mental health.
- Don’t have underlying medical conditions that prevent optimal wound healing or recovery.
- Don’t smoke or are willing to stop smoking several months before and after the surgery.
- Have realistic expectations from eyelid surgery.
- Have saggy or droopy upper eyelids, excess skin on the upper eyelids, poor peripheral vision, or bags under your eyes.
Dr. Chaowen Wu carefully examines your eyelids, discusses your goals, and reviews your medical history to ensure you’re a suitable candidate. She favors natural procedures that improve your overall facial appearance while ensuring natural-looking results inspired by your own body.
What happens during eyelid surgery?
Your eyelid surgery is performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia with sedation. Dr. Wu avoids general anesthesia to negate the possibility of the associated risks. The specific surgical techniques depend on your specific cosmetic goals and concerns. For upper eyelid surgery, the incision will be made along the natural crease of the upper eyelid. For lower eyelid surgery, the incision will be made just beneath the lower eyelid lashes.
After making the necessary incisions, Dr. Wu will carefully remove the appropriate amount of unwanted skin from your eyelids and reposition the muscles. Furthermore, if you have dark circles or under-eye hollows, the surgeon will draw fat cells from other parts of your body, such as the abdomen, and inject them under your eyes. This will make your eyes look more youthful and brighter.
What’s the eyelid surgery recovery process like?
Afterward your blepharoplasty procedure you can take oral medications to reduce pain and discomfort. The sutures will be removed after 5 to 7 days, and the post-treatment swelling and bruising will gradually dissipate after 1 to 2 weeks. You can resume wearing contact lenses after 7 to 10 days. Dr. Wu will provide a comprehensive list of aftercare guidelines to ensure you have a smooth and safe recovery process.
